Let's keep it real...

I had a whole rant planned on worthiness, but since no one can talk about anything but coronavirus, I am going to throw my two cents into the ring.

I follow the news fairly closely. For a while, I had stopped watching it because I thought it was adding to my then depressive state, but now while I am cooking in the kitchen every morning, I keep CNN playing in the background. When COVID-19 became barely a mention on the news, my ears perked up. Virus, what?!  A week before, a very woo-woo podcast that I listen to on occasion had mentioned that the akashic records (so much to explain, just google it) were predicting a worldwide viral outbreak. I honestly thought nothing of her suggestion (naive me actually scoffed at this prediction) until the news starting talking about coronavirus in China. Immediately, my mind starting spinning. Oh my goodness, this chick was right and we are all going to get sick and die. Of course, catastrophic thinking is directly where my mind went. I spiraled for a few weeks until the rest of humanity caught up with my doomsday mentality.

But then I went to therapy. Thank the heavens for therapy!!

Here's the the thing: NOTHING in this life is a guarantee. Not your next breath, not tomorrow, not the next month. NOTHING. And there is not a damn thing we can do about that. All we can do is continue on our journey and pray that our days are filled with good health, love, community and laughter.

I am not trying to be trite here or diminish the fact that this outbreak is serious. It is. But so is cancer and diabetes and the flu and every other disease, virus, bacteria, tumor, etc. that can kill you. Crossing the road without looking can kill you. Texting while driving can kill you. A peanut or a bee could kill you. We do not live in a fluffy cotton filled bubble, folks. There are things in this world that can do us serious harm and yet we wake up every day and continue on our path.

So what are you going to do? Are you going to stop showing up in your life? Are you going to lock your doors and stay inside forever? Because I promise you, the end is still coming, no matter how much toilet paper and Purell you buy.

And I'm not knocking those of you who are stocking up. Stock up! Do whatever makes you feel safe. Fortunately for me, as a chef, my cupboards are always stocked (like borderline hoarder style). If you weren't always washing your hands consistently, then yes, you probably should begin now. If you want to wear a mask, wear a mask. If you want to wear disposable gloves, do that. Whatever makes you feel better, do that. And if you are sick, then do the rest of the world a favor and stay home.

Here's my take away from therapy, I cannot live my authentic truth if I am allowing fear to be my navigator. And everything that is happening now is based on fear. Duh, we all fear the unknown. But guess what? Every future thing is unknown, not just the coronavirus. Back to my original thought, if you are going to fear the coronavirus, then you should fear pretty much everything because you have no control over what happens next.

So what happens if you get infected? Just like everything else in the world, you're going to freakin' deal with it. You're going to brave whatever the universe hurls at you. You're going to face it just like you have everything else up until this point. And not that I can promise that we are all going to come out unscathed in this crappy situation, but I can promise you that stressing over it and freaking out is not going to get you anywhere positive. But hey, I'd rather carry on living positively than shrink away in fear.

How about you?
